Born in Puerto Rico on June 13, 1949, Soke Anthony C. Marquez embarked on a lifelong martial arts journey that has made a global impact. Raised in New York City, his first exposure to martial arts was through White Crane Gung Fu, igniting a passion that would shape his career.
A Legacy of Training & Teaching
Soke Marquez began formal martial arts training in 1971 while serving in the U.S. Air Force in Japan, where he earned his Shodan (black belt) in Yoshukai Karate. Over the next decade, he trained in Shorinji Ryu Karate, Goju-Ryu Karate, and Kobudo, developing a deep understanding of traditional Okinawan martial arts. His time in Okinawa led him to train under legendary masters such as Master Masanobu Shinjo, Master Masanobu Kina, and Master Katsuyoshi Kanei, earning high-ranking black belts and instructor titles.
Returning to the United States in 1985, Soke Marquez dedicated himself to preserving and evolving traditional martial arts, founding multiple organizations, including:

Okinawa Tanzenbukan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do
Kokusai Ryukyu Kobujutsu Kenkyokai

Impact on Adaptive Martial Arts
Recognized as a pioneer in adaptive and therapeutic martial arts, Soke Marquez has dedicated his career to making martial arts accessible for individuals with disabilities. His groundbreaking work led to the establishment of the 1st World Martial Arts Championship for People with Disabilities and multiple non-profit initiatives promoting inclusion and empowerment through martial arts.
