Readiness is about more than age. Curiosity, comfort in a group, and a positive first experience matter.
Begin with the child, not the belt
A child’s readiness for karate depends on their interest, ability to engage with simple instructions, and comfort with the learning environment. Different children develop at different rates. A trial conversation with an instructor can help you find the right starting point.
What to ask before starting
Ask about class size, age grouping, parent observation, lesson format, and how instructors respond when a young learner needs a break. A supportive environment should make room for gradual progress.
Make the first visit low pressure
Talk about the visit as a chance to explore. Choose comfortable clothing, arrive with time to settle in, and ask the dojo what to bring. Do not promise a belt or set a performance goal for the first class.
